Paintings

Curated by Professor Jim Hunter, this show brings together paintings by Frank Bowling, whose large-scale work rose to prominence in the 1980’s. Working together to present an exemplary selection of Bowling’s work, the curator and artist revisit work from the past and exhibit it alongside more recent pieces.
Bowling has a distinctive style, using paint as the subject and the medium. By hanging and re-hanging the work, sometimes even upside down, the interpretation of the painting is nuanced and re-interpreted.
With an essay by Professor Jim Hunter which explains the artist’s motivation to paint on such a big scale.
